Lady Dior Art #9: Contemporary artists reinterpreting the iconic bag

Since its launch in 2016, the Dior Lady Art project has established itself as a major initiative, bringing together artists from around the world to reimagine the iconic Lady Dior bag. This program highlights the fusion of contemporary art and Dior’s exceptional craftsmanship. Each artist explores diverse themes, ranging from cultural heritage to environmental issues, while showcasing remarkable technical expertise.
Vaughn Spann, known for his bold style that merges abstraction and figuration, reimagines the Lady Dior with a dynamic blend of design and artistic expression. The bag crafted in pink plexiglass, takes inspiration from 1980s briefcases and features an oversized “X,” a recurring signature in Spann’s work. Another model incorporates geometric patterns from his painting Dalmatian, while two others bring his artworks Firestorm and Untitled (stormy) to life with vibrant textures and striking contrasts. Each piece transforms the iconic Lady Dior into a modern and innovative masterpiece.

Woo Kukwon
Woo Kukwon, a South Korean artist, reimagines the Lady Dior by incorporating elements inspired by his family and his dog. His designs include motifs such as a starry sky dedicated to his daughter, blossoming cherry trees, and intricate textures crafted with beads or black crystals. The addition of his dog as a charm on the clasps adds a deeply personal and heartfelt touch.

Jeffrey Gibson
Jeffrey Gibson, artiste multidisciplinaire, fusionne artisanat amérindien et esthétique contemporaine pour réinventer le Lady Dior. Inspiré de ses sacs de frappe, il transforme le modèle en une œuvre pop et engagée. Un côté du sac est orné de l’inscription perlée « love, love, love », tandis que l’autre présente des cadenas-cœurs imprimés en 3D, en hommage aux ponts parisiens et leurs symboles d’amour. Cette création vibrante célèbre la joie, l’amour et les voix souvent oubliées, alliant passion, modernité et émotion.

Liang Yuanwei
Liang Yuanwei, artiste chinoise renommée pour son approche méticuleuse et ses compositions délicates, s’inspire du passage du temps et de la beauté du quotidien. Pour Dior Lady Art, elle revisite son œuvre Golden Notes, transposant ses motifs floraux et ses détails raffinés sur le Lady Dior à travers une technique innovante d’impression 3D. Le sac, conçu en résine, évoque la texture de la céramique craquelée de la dynastie Song, rendant hommage à la tradition tout en intégrant une touche contemporaine. Décliné dans des tons de vert évoquant la richesse du monde végétal, il est orné de poignées et d’une bandoulière rappelant la douceur du jade, tandis que des finitions en métal doré vieilli renforcent son allure intemporelle et sophistiquée.

Danielle Mckinney
Danielle Mckinney, originally from Montgomery, Alabama, delves into themes of intimacy and hidden narratives through her work, celebrating the inner lives of women. For her Lady Dior design, she uses a light brown textile reminiscent of the texture of her paintings. At the center, a hand-embroidered female silhouette reflects her distinctive style, while butterflies, symbolizing freedom and imagination, delicately adorn the bag. Subtle touches of red and refined embellishments add depth to this introspective and poetic creation.
